This has probably been raised a bunch of times here, but what's your take on a passive bass with a eq pedal or rack as opposed to an active bass with a built in eq. The reason I bring it up is I love the flexibility of modern eq's but I'm a sucker for old school passive jazz basses.
Sep 18, 2002. Birmingham, AL. I always use a preamp pedal, a Sansamp or VT Bass, regardless of onboard electronics. I have basses with EMGs, passive PJs, active (Audere) jazzes, and a Stingray. All of them sound great through the preamps. The onboard stuff doesn't color the tone that much, I just use it for small tweaks when necessary. I like the active electronics and that there's a switch for passive. The tone was punchy but I could dial in some growl, too. It's short scale so easy for my smaller hands, but I've made do on regular scale basses (and I play upright, I can stretch). Since I really liked that bass, I wanted to compare a bunch of others and see what else I liked.I doubt there is much difference. Because of the variation between individual instruments, it is hard to compare a passive bass to an active bass in passive mode, even if one has two identical instruments and only one possess a pre-amp. However, when using an external pre-amp, it is possible to get a feeling for it.JLUbt9.
